Scientific Lead

The Scientific Lead will be a senior leadership position within the Two Labs Communication business. Working closely with the General Manager, the Scientific Lead will help devise and deliver on the Go-To-Market strategy for the new offering. Key to this will be to build a world class scientific services team while creating a new agency model that responds to the unique demands of emerging and small biotech clients. The Scientific Lead will be responsible for ensuring that the division delivers to the highest scientific standards and for forming strong partnerships not just with C-suite level clients but also with world renowned external experts. They will be expected to review the scientific content of others’ work and for mentoring/supporting the less experienced team members. Additionally, the role will require hands on involvement to deliver across a wide range of client deliverables, requiring the ability to facilitate effectively across a multidisciplinary team and work with agility.

Role and responsibilities:

Business leadership:

  • Work with GM to create and implement business unit strategy including presentation to senior leadership of Two Labs as well as budget and resource management responsibility to deliver to growth and profit targets
  • Effective team builder with experience and enthusiasm for working in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Provide overarching scientific, strategic, and tactical direction/leadership
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with external stakeholders and engage in discussions of science and strategy with both c-suite level clients and world-renowned external experts

Content development:

  • Demonstrates up-to-date expert knowledge of therapeutic area(s), client and competitor product(s), the market, the compliance/regulatory environment (general and client-specific), and international standards for disclosing medical/scientific content
  • Applies the knowledge to develop high-quality, scientifically accurate, strategically aligned, ethical, and compliant content that is aligned with industry standards (e.g. ICMJE, GPP3) realizes client and thought-leader objectives, and passes client medical/legal review
  • Develops content for a range of project types, writing styles, and media as appropriate to target audience(s) and to meet client objectives
  • Contributes to scientific strategy development and recommends communication approaches for optimal support of the clients’ strategic objectives
  • Critically reviews colleagues’ work and provides feedback to ensure scientific accuracy and strategic alignment
  • Drive client meetings and onsite programs, developing materials and delivering presentations, as needed

Team development:

  • Experience of creating team from scratch, identifying and attracting key talent, and building network of expert freelancers to provide flexible resource solutions
  • Line management experience with ability to easily manage and motivate team members with a range of experience levels and seniority
  • Providing general scientific and strategic guidance and advice to other members of the team
  • Manages/negotiates resources across the business to ensure effective delivery

Project leadership:

  • Drives the implementation of, and ensures adherence to, processes/procedures that align with internal and client requirements/standard operating procedures (SOPs) and policies
  • Manages and prioritizes own and project team workload, delivering to agreed timeline and budget, to meet client/business needs
  • Working with Program Support/Account Management, provides input for project/program specifications and budget generation
  • Drives project status/milestone tracking and out-of-scope reporting to ensure project profitability
  • Undertakes negotiations with external partners regarding implications of changes in scope of work, timelines, and other delivery parameters – or escalates, as appropriate

Business development:

  • Drives the development of scientific content for new business opportunities/proposals and participates in pitch presentations
  • With an in-depth knowledge of Two Labs and EPG multichannel business offerings, and by keeping up to date with market developments, recognizes or proactively identifies new project opportunities through interactions with clients and external experts

Role requirements:

Minimum and essential qualifications, experience and technical expertise required to complete role

  • An advanced degree, (e.g. MSN, PharmD, PhD) or equivalent relevant experience, in a life sciences or clinical discipline
  • Experience with HCP to HCP communications preferred
  • Working knowledge of and appreciation for the medical affairs/medical communications challenges of small and emerging biotech/biopharma clients
  • An average of 6–8 years of medical communications (or HEOR/market access, as appropriate) experience, preferably gained across both publications and non-publications medcomms deliverables
  • A strong command of the English language and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • In depth knowledge of assigned therapeutic area(s), as well as ability to assimilate new information, working across or switching between multiple areas, as needed
  • Ability to interpret, evaluate, and communicate (in a variety of formats and styles) complex scientific and clinical data
  • Expertise in use of online and other data sources for literature searches and information retrieval
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat
  • Previous senior leadership experience, ideally in a global environment, is preferred
